Navy downs Army and clinches Defence Services Rugby Championship 2009 thumbnail

In a hard fought encounter, the marauding Navy ruggerites recorded an exciting, 16 to 15 win against Army to win the Defence Services Rugby Championship 2009 today, (16th November 2009). The final match was worked off between Navy and Army at Navy’s Rugby Grounds in Welisara. Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe who is also the Chairman of Defence Services Sports Committee was in attendance to witness the final match. The finals drew a large crowd including many Navy and Army officers and other personnel.

The final game saw Navy kicking off with a fine display of skill and talent. Navy’s 16 points came off with two try’s and two penalties. Niranjan Wickramaratna broke through the Army defenses to score the first try in the first half. Army in return scored three penalties. The second half saw much excitement when the Navy pack led by Lieutenant Ramsith Peiris fought back with vengeance to score one try and two penalties with Ravi Jayasuriya scoring the try and take up the total score to 16 points. Army men could only muster two penalties before the long whistle.

With this Championship title, Navy had added another feather in their cap and made their presence felt much in the Defence Services Games 2009.

At the end of the final game, Commander of Navy congratulated all players for the wonderful game played in the true spirit of the sportsmanship and promoting camaraderie between the two forces.
